This blog was created for the Junior AVID students of River City High School. This site will be used to link students to important college information. This is also a place for RC AVID students to discuss topics of high school or college
This is a link to the site where I printed these entries. Feel free to go to this site if you did not get a chance to repond to all of the articles.http://www.college-admission-essay.com/collegetransitiontales.html
ReplyDeleteI read these 3 articles "Adjusted Expectations" by Theodora Blanchfield, "Leaving Home" by Evan Bailyn, and "A New Life awaits you" by Rachel Travel. The one Iliked best was a new life awaits you because the person explains how she went through college clings to her past but moves forward.
ReplyDeleteHey AVID Class of 2011, I read the articles, "University of Missouri"-Columbia: Freshman Fears, "Embracing A New Routine" and "Adjusted Expectations". From these articles, I came to know that life is all about change and regardless of where one attends college, they will feel different as soon as they walk onto the college campus. My FAVORITE article was, "University of Missouri".. becuase Ms. Halmick explained every little detail and mistake that could happen to anyone. It may feel like the first day of high school all over again once we start college, but that's an additional four years of our life that we can never forget.
ReplyDeleteHello everyone. I read the articles, American University: Adjusting Expectations,
ReplyDeleteUC Santa Barbara: Party School Blues, and my favorite because I want to go there
UC Berkeley: How My Haircut Saved My Sanity. Before reading these articles I knew I wanted to go to college. I knew there would be unseen obstcales but in articles like the ones read today I didnt think about me missing cool parties, friends, and family. And just because I love the haircut article so much when i first get into college, if I can remember, I will get my haircut!
The articles i read were Adjusting Expectations by Theodora Blanchfield, Embracing a new routine by Kimmie Smith, and How my haircut saved my sanity by Phoung Tran. My favorite was Adjusting Expectations because at first theodora wanted to go to the party collage just because her best friend did but then when she didn't get in she found a new interest for american university. The thing that i liked about it is that she didn't give once she got refused by some collages, She continued on with her life.
ReplyDeleteHi class of 2011! The articles I read were "Adjusting Expectations", "UC Berkeley: How My Haircut Saved My Family", and "College: The Anti-High School". I liked "Adjusting Expectations" the most because it made me realize that just because you want to go a college due to the fact that it's fun or in a major city, etc., it doesn't change the fact that the college you choose may or may not be what you expect.
ReplyDeleteI read the articles "Freshmen Fears", "College: The Anti-High School", and "Adjusting Expectations". I learned that college is a whole unique experience. I liked "Freshmen Fears" because it offered many tips to follow during Freshmen year. And i liked the other 2 articles because they talk about how college is a unique experience
ReplyDeleteHello class of 2011, the articles I read were "Leaving Home" by Evan Bailyn, "A New Life awaits you" by Rachel Travel, and "Embracing A New Routine" by Kimmie Smith. My favorite article that I read was "Embracing A New Routine" by Kimmie Smith. I like that article because it states that the college life is different than the high school live. She also states that every day is new and I can't wait for that new experience.
ReplyDeleteHey AVID family..=)! The articles that i read were "leaving home" by Eva Bailyn, "Adjusting expectations" by Theodoral Blanchfield, and the last one was "Embracing a new routine" by Kimie Smith. The one that i like the best was "Embracing a new routine" because it tells you how maybe you are those people that want to go away from home maybe out of state and you are really confident that your friends from high school will stick together even after high school because you guys promise each other that you guys will write each other and spend the summers together. well NO things will change one will meet new friends and you won't have mom in the morning telling you to wake up and get ready. Your journy starts once you step in that college campus. Your destiny is in your hands.
ReplyDeleteSup kids. I read "College: The Anti-High School", "UC Berkely: How My Haircut Saved my Sanity", and "UC Santa Barbara: Party School Blues". The articles made me excited for college almost like visiting the campus of my dreams. My favorite was "College: The Anti-High School" because it relates closely to how I currently feel about college. The article written by the UC Santa Barbara grad was too far off to relate well to. Overall, it was great to know and only solidifies my want to go away to college. :)
ReplyDeleteSup?
ReplyDeleteSo I read all four and they were very interesting because that is what I want to do is move away from home when I go to college. It was interesting to see how certain people adjusted to the new on-your-own type of life and whether liked it and could handle it. I agree that college is mostly being on your own. Its every man for himself type of way. I've sort of experienced some of it last summer when I went to Sac City for classes. You really are on your own, and whether or not you go to class is entirely up to you; your grade and how much you learn is up to you. You have to be more forward and confident, to get the classes you want and how much studying you wanna do and how much you want to go to class. It sounds all very exciting and I can't wait! :)
Each of the articles, being that I read all four of the available ones, shared a different yet similar opinion on what it was going to be like to leave home to go to university when we reach adulthood. Leaving home means becoming more responsible for your own actions, necessities and priorities. Many of the opinions of each article states that it is scary and life changing to have to wake yourself up in the morning without having someone else to rely on to wake you up, or that it will be exhilarating to work on your own and not deal with the hassle of teachers and staff members telling you what you're good at and when to go to class. You are completely self-dependent. I, personally, can't wait to be on my own. I have purposely chosen schools on the east coast, though I have widespread applications in mind.

ReplyDeleteHolla everybody, I read "freshman Fears" Anti-High Shool" and my favorite "A New Life Awaits You". The reasone this article was my favorite was because as i read it a chill ran up and down my spine. As I read I kept on getting flash backs of every single time my sisters or other family members told me that college will be scary in the beginning then you will never want to leave it when it's time to move on. Rachel Tavel talks about her transition from a warm loving high school to a college that is stange and big. At the end she was glad she left and happy she took a bite of that "carrot", that started her new life. Hopefully i can and will do the same. 8)
ReplyDeleteI read "Adjusting Expectations" and it basically talked about college life being more exciting and much better than high school. I also read Freshmen Fears which explained the author's experience on her first day of college and all the messing up she did and how the experience taught her a lot.
ReplyDeleteThe article about anti-high school was the one that struck me the most because i never knew it would be like that in college. In high school there are people that lead you in the right direction and tell you what you should do and what not to do. But in college you are on your on. no one will tell you to get to class, what classes you need to take, you make your own decisions. so make good decisions because you will have to live with them the rest of your life.
ReplyDeleteTHIEZZ!!When i think of living alone, away from my parents, parites and girls and liquids illegal to my age come to mind.NOT STUDDYING.THIEZZ!!it is difficult to imagine myself having all these "fun" oppurtunities but sticking to School.*sigh*THIEZZ!!after reading the prompts from class, i realized that teens can get pretty Bi**hy after leaving home. Mommy i miss you, i wanna go home, this is hard, i woke this morning naked in the middle of the quad and cant remember what i did last night!!i know my pride wont allow me to call my parents and complain to them how "hard" campus life is. i know that at times ill start to feel lonely...BUT THATS WHAT COED HOUSING IS FOR RIGHT:D!! ReplyDeleteHey class, the three articles I read where "Adjusted Expectations", "A new life awaits you" and "College: The Anti-High school". The one I liked the most was "A new life awaits you" by Rachel Tavel. I liked it the most because Rachel has similar questions to the ones I have or might have in the near future. I also liked how she expresses college being like a dangling carrot in front of her. I liked when she said, "High School can be hard to leave, but what lies ahead is your life... so go there and find out what it is all about."
ReplyDeleteHi avid class
ReplyDeleteafter reading the articles about leaving home, it actually made me think of how my future was going to look like. We might think that because we are in high school were mature & responsable, but the truth is that we are still not ready for the real world. when we are in high school everyone does the job for us,our parents teachers are always pushing us to do better. We dont notice that we are weak untill we graduate from high school & find out what the real world look like.Yes it is going to be hard to leave our friends & family, but in order for us to be succesful we have to fall first. We have to learn from our own mistakes & overcome those fears! I know that this avid class of 2011 will be succesful in life and will not regret leaving home! :]
Hello Mi Familia(: so i have read these articles about leaving home and it made me think about what is yet to come...about what college is good and what is bad for me...but by reading these articles it made me more anxious to leave...because a new life awaits me in college...i have always wanted to leave home and go to college...but not because of my household is bad,its just because if we never move out then we will never expirence life...we will never grow up...my parents have always pushed me to do better in life and be better than them, and that is exactally what im going to do...I am going to confess leaving west sacramento will be hard because i have grown up here and im leaving everything freinds ,family,my enviornment...but i have heard so many teachers say "Sacramento is not going anywhere" and this is so true its not...so we might as well leave make the best of it then come back when we have matured a little more...growing up is a part of life we all must do it, and so is leaving home
ReplyDeleteHeyyyy, I read the following three articles called "adjusting expectations","freshman fears" and "UC Berkeley: how my haircut saved my sanity".
ReplyDeleteEach one of these following three articles made me think about my future in college but the one i liked the most was "freshman fears" because it helps you figure out that when you reach college you cant have no one holding your hand no more your on your own and that half the freshman of college are going to be scared but later on in college you might rid of your cowardliness so make sure if your going to college and your scared you better live at home then until your not cowardly no more.
Hey AVID i read these articles and the one i was motly interested in was College: The Anti-Highschool becuase of the major transition of highschool to college and all the differnce it can make in our lives. But Overall these articles can give us life lessons that we can apply to lead us into a better life and teaches us to be indpendent.
ReplyDeleteHello Class of 2011! well i read the articles and they made me realize that not to long from now am going to be steping into a new life that will change me for better. yeah there are going to be bumps in the middle but i think am ready for the challenge. Moving away from home might be my grates fears but not that i read thes articles made me realize am not going to be the only one missing my family but after all am excited to start a new and exciting life.
ReplyDeleteHola! I have read the following articles:"Adjusted Expectations","A New Life Awaits You", and "Embracing a New Routine." My favorite one would have to be "Embracing a New Routine" because it shows that you can't always be sure that what you want is exactly what you believe you want once you get it. She talks about how happy she is moving out but as soon as she moves, she gets homesick, and she then has to deal with getting used to the college life, as well as being away from her parents.
ReplyDeleteHey AVID class..Reading the articles but mostly "adjusting expectations" by Theodoral Blanchfield got me thinking because i like to party but not because of that am going to choos a party school because soon pARTY TIME WILL BE OVER AND THE REAL adventure will come seeking for a better me i have to thing ahead for my future and put aside the partys.
